Dealing With Criticism

How Can You Lessen The Blow?

dealing_with_criticism Most of us do not like dealing with criticism. There was a time when my natural inclination was to tensed up and become defensive. Over the years, however, I've learned not to take criticism at face value, but to look below the surface before I react.

Consider the Source

Many times, we can find ourselves being criticized by spiteful or jealous people. I recall a co-worker who found something wrong with everything I did. At the time, my department was receiving many accolades for the accomplishments achieved by my team. My co-worker's team received no recognition at all.

The point is - it is not worth reacting to all criticism. You get to decide. Always be wary of people who are out to hurt you. Criticism is the only way they can think to get to you. I once heard a saying that "hurting people hurt other people." Refuse to relinquish your personal power to such people. Do not give them the satisfaction of a reaction.

A Blessing In Disguise?

dealing_with_criticism Criticism by spiteful or jealous people can be a compliment in disguise. Why so much focus on you? They obviously see you as a person worthy of attention.

On the other hand, I have come to realize that most of the criticism I receive is constructive feedback meant to make me better. Yes, dealing with criticism can be painful this is why I liken it to medicine that taste nasty going down but makes me better once in my system.

I am always open to feedback from people I respect and care about, especially when I know they have my best interest at heart. Dealing with criticism under these circumstances still is not easy; but, in these cases, I try to view the feedback as a learning opportunity. There is one very important truth that never changes - you can NEVER become BETTER if you do not know where you need to grow or improve.

Constructive Feedback is Meant to Make You Better

Ultimately, it is in your best interest to learn how to handle criticism so that you can take advantage of the good criticism and eliminate the bad criticism. How do you tell the difference between the two? Well, you have to be willing to be honest with yourself and take a good hard look at your behavior and actions. You can not become defensive, and you must ask yourself if the criticism received can be used to learn and grow.

Most importantly, do not let criticism rule you. Stay true to yourself, your goals, and your dreams. Think of criticism as a powerful tool. If you use the tool right, you will reap benefits. You will become a better person. If you use the tool incorrectly, you can inflict unnecessary damage and pain.
