Following are common sense employee motivation techniques that are proven to work, but only if you do your part right.

Employee Motivation Techniques and Ideas:

  1. Value Employees - It will not kill you to acknowledge employees with a "hello" or to ask, "how's it going?" Simply take 30 seconds to LISTEN and focus on them. Employees want to know how much you care about them, before they are willing to consider letting you influence their actions and decisions. Just like you, employeess want to feel valued and appreciated. Everyone wants to be treated with a little dignity and respect. Everyone deserves this. So start with this important foundation. Remember, while employees will not like everything your say or do, they have to TRUST you. And this, you have to earn.

When an employee knows you care and value them, you have a better shot at influencing their behavior and actions.

  2. Value Employees Some More - Make employees feel like they are a valued part of the process. Share goals with them. Refer to workloads and department initiatives as "Ours" not "Yours". Flat out ask for their help and let them know you appreciate their efforts. Keep them updated on progress and setbacks. Ask for their feedback and ideas on how to make things better. Most importantly, implement their ideas and suggestions whenever possible.

If you are in a leadership role, employees may show respect for you due to your title, but it doesn't mean they will give you their best. You've got to earn it and show them that you deserve it. They must WANT to work for you. Unfortunately, there are many people in leadership roles who have not learned this valuable lesson yet. Don't be one of them. In the long run, you'll only hurt yourself. Will it take a little effort on your part to effectively motivate employees? Yes. But the upfront effort will pay you back - tenfold.

  3. Support Employees - Make sure employees have the tools and training to do their jobs effectively. If there are obstacles standing in their way, help remove them. Again, it benefits you in the long run.

  4. Celebrate Small Successes - Whenever a employees exceeds or accomplishes a goal or behavior you want to see, recognize it. This is a great way to reinforce what you want. This also reminds other employees what they need to do to be successful as well.

You may be thinking that taking time to celebrate reduces productivity, but many studies have proven the exact opposite to be true. A happy and motivated workforce gets the job done (and then some) so a small celebration is a no-brainer investment that smart leaders gladly make.

  5. Tie Individual Goals and Incentives to Your Overall Goals and Objectives - Reward people accordingly. Make sure that those who give the best efforts get the best rewards, while those who give little to nothing receive the same in return.

Yes, it can be unpleasant dealing with negative employee issues. Truthfully, we all like to avoid them as much as possible. However, don't do it! You'll be making a huge mistake if you ignore issues and problems, because your good employees will figure it out. This sends a mixed message, because your actions will show you value them less. After all, why should they work their butt off for you, when the slackers get a free ride. It's not fair. Talk about a demotivator? This is it.
  6. These employee motivation techniques and ideas should give you a starting point when it comes to motivating employees. If you walk away with nothing else, remember to learn what is important to employees and use that as one more piece of information to not only motivate them to do more work, but to help them advance and be successful in their career.
