Want to create excellent conversation questions? Then
forget "How's the weather?" That question is rained out, dried up, and
plain ole tired! You need new questions that are neutral, will not
offend, and put the person at ease.
Questions to Get Your Dialog Flowing:
Focus on something the person is wearing or carrying
and ask a question about it. Example: Is that an I Phone? I've been
wanting to get one for ages. Can you tell me what you like and don't
like about it?
Find something to compliment the person
and then follow up with a question. Example: Is that a new haircut? It really
suits you. Who is your stylist or barber?
Many people know or heard of sports. Ask
a question about a sport. If a disinterested person lives in a place where sports are
popular ask how they've managed to stay neutral.
Ask about favorite music or the types of music they
find relaxing.
If they have children, inquiring about the kids is a
great conversation piece.
Inquire about pets. There are many fanatic pet
owner's out there who would love to share their stories.
Ask advice on something general, such as the
best headache medicine.
Ask about favorite leisure activity. This question
should open
up an entire range of subtopics for discussion.
Ask what they are most proud of.
If you are aware of something the person is
knowledgeable or skilled, ask a question.
Ask about the best coffee they've ever tasted.
Ask about their preferred auto repair shop.
Ask about the best pizza in their location
or the food specialty of your choice.
Ask about their best subject in school or college.
Ask about their favorite local entertainment. Who
knows you may discover a great place.
Ask what their favorite age and
why it was a memorable period in life?
Ask about their greatest accomplishment.
Ask how they juggle their busy schedules.
Ask about their favorite movie.
Ask about services they use - home repairs, etc....
You may find great referrals for future use.
Not so excellent conversation questions to avoid. People get very
passionate about certain topics and unless you are motivated for a
potential heated discussion or tension stay away from these:
Politics
Religion
Social issues such as abortion, prayer in school, the
death penalty, war, Gay rights, Women's rights.
Gossip. Have you heard about.......What do you
think of so and so's divorce, etc....
Now you're ready to get the conversation started and keep
the chit chat flowing. Use these starter questions and build upon them.
Over time, you'll become a natural.
