Goal Setting Activities, Tips, and Strategies

Write Yourself a Goal Achievement Letter

This is simply one of the most inexpensive and effective goal setting activities you can do. This goal setting strategy will help you fully develop your goals - adding details, emotions, and visualizations that can help firmly plant what you want to achieve in your mind.

To help you develop the details you need, I suggest you complete the Goal Detail worksheet. You can download it here. Complete a worksheet for each goal.

Putting Your Senses to Paper

Now, it's time to start your letter. Before you begin to write, however, try this. Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and visualize everything that is happening the moment you achieve your future goal. It's important that you write in present tense and in first person. Make your letter feel real and make it all about you - your feelings, and what you've overcome to reach such a grand moment.

Goal Setting Activities: It's All About You

Be totally selfish here. Don't try to be perfect. Simply write. Worry about grammar and spelling later. These are not important. What is important is that you capture this future state clearly in your mind. Your goal is to wrap your senses around your words.

What's Your Instincts Tell You?

There is one other thing you must do. Conduct an instinct check. How? Simply rely on your gut reaction as you write. Do you really feel connected to the future you are writing about? Does it 'feel' right? Do you really believe you can make it happen? More importantly, do you feel excited and enthusiastic about your visualization?

You are Either on the Right Track or You Need a New Track

If it feels right, you are on the right track. If it doesn't feel right, you have not figured out what you really want yet. I know, it can be frustrating. But you can do this! Read about goal congruence and take advantage of the free self surveys. Make sure you are completely honest with your answer, because you are only doing this for yourself.

Now if completed these goal setting activities, feel you've been thorough, but do not feel good about the results, then you may want to try this book called Growing Wings Self-Discovery Workbook: 17 Workshops to a Better Life, Vol. 1. Yes, there is a small cost, it's full of outstanding questions and worksheets that can take your findings to an entirely new level. Truthfully, I hope you know your future is worth it. Personally, I've been stuck on this step a time or two. I've also ignored my instincts and regretted it later. Learn from my mistakes.

Get it right. Build your goals on a solid foundation so that it doesn't cave in on you after you've spent your time and effort.

Goal Achieving to the Letter

Once you've completed your letter, polish a final version. Your efforts represent your goal achieving time-capsule, because you are going to refer to it again during that future date. However, the twist is you are going to read your letter repeatedly until your goal date arrives. Why? Because it becomes embedded in your mind. Your mind will see it as real and subconsiously you will start taking action and attracting situations and people that will help move your goals achieving in the right direction.
