Goal Setting Theory on Motivation

Do You Want to Know the Hidden Secret?

The number one resource I personally use for motivation and reaching goals. It's the little things you do that can reap you tons of beneftis along with a grand sense of accomplishment. Check out Everything Counts!

There are little nuggets of wisdom in the goal setting theory on motivation that can prove useful for certain types of goal setting techniques and achievements. This motivation theory derives its foundation from education, but is a key weapon used by coaches when pumping up their players to win a game. The main premise of this theory is the goal itself serves as continuous fuel to keep going.

What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals. - Zig Ziglar

Studies show there are people who love the sense of accomplishment they feel when overcoming obstacles or persevering through challenges. These types of people love to experience the process itself. So how does this apply to you? You can use this information to efficiently fuel your motivation for success. Use it to develop your personal motivation strategy.

Plotting your success is easier when you consider these three things from the Goal Setting Theory:

  1. The nature of the goal itself: What actions must you take?
  2. How long do you anticipate until you achieve the goal? Do you classify the goal as: short term (less than a year); mid-term (one to three years), or long-term (greaterthan three years)? Why do you care? Well, it is much more difficult to maintain motivation over a longer period of time. This information will help you plan your strategy.
  3. Your attitude/aptitude towards the task itself. Is the task something you love to do? Is it something you dread? Do you already possess the needed skills to perform the tasks or do you need to learn them?

The Wisdom You Need

When you understand your goal, your ability to achieve the goal, and the time necessary to achieve the goal, you can adjust your motivation techniques accordingly. When you identify a task you love doing you need little to no motivation. This will excite you and create momentum for goal achievement. For those difficult tasks you can get excited from your efforts. You now understand that every attempt contributes to progress and personal growth. This is huge. You are learning persistence..... a major trait of successful people. Best of all....YOU SET YOURSELF UP FOR OPTIMAL GOAL ACHIEVEMENT!!!!!
