Inferiority Complex
How to Stop Believing Others Are Better Than You
An inferiority complex can be related to low self esteem. The dictionary defines it as, "a persistent sense of inadequacy or a tendency to self-diminishment." The distinction is that while you may feel inferior around certain people or in certain situations - low self esteem is usually a mental and emotional condition that is constantly present.
How do you deal with the feeling that others are better than you?
- Consider the Source. Where did the belief come from? Your upbringing? Your religion? Personal experience? Culture and/or society?
At some point in your life, somewhere along the way, you where taught or led to believe something or someone is superior. Take some time and give this some thought. More than likely, this belief was ingrained into your psyche over a period of time.
- Challenge the Assumptions. Ask yourself, "Why am I inferior?" Is it your ethnicity? Your gender? Your education level? Your knowledge? Your skill? A disability or other limitation?
- Knock Down the Assumptions. Women have been fighting for equal rights for years. Who says they cannot do it simply because they are women?
People with disabilities have been fighting for their right to work. They are proving themselves loyal and productive employees. Who says they cannot do a good job?
African Americans are showing they are intelligent and productive members of society. Who says they are inferior simply because of the color of their skin?
Whatever the reason you feel inferior, work to close the gap or remove the obstacle. It is being done everyday by people just like you. Join their ranks.
If you feel inferior, because you lack the education, then get it. If you feel inferior, because you cannot communicate well, then improve this skill. If you feel inferior because of race, gender, or religion stand tall. Be proud of who you are, comfortable in your own skin, and let the person you are and what you have to offer shine through.
Remember that you cannot undo years of conditioning and beliefs overnight. Eliminating an inferiority complex will take time and determination. Rely on positive reinforcement, persistent, and your desire for change to guide and motivate you. Lastly, recognizing and dealing with an inferiority complex is another way for building self esteem.
