Tap Into the Motivation Within

Intrinsic motivation comes from within you. It's the most powerful source of motivation, because it's often driven from strong emotions and convictions.

Examples of intrinsic motivators are:

  • Acceptance - the need for approval, to belong.
  • Affection - the need to feel loved.
  • Inquisitiveness - the need to learn and grow.
  • Hunger - the need for food or to satisfy some other pressing need.
  • Honor - the need for loyalty, to have integrity.
  • Purpose - the need to have meaning in life.
  • Independence - the need for individuality.
  • Order - the need for a stable, predictable environment.
  • Physical Well-Being - the need to be physically/mentally healthy.
  • Power - the need for influence.
  • Control - the need to be in charge.
  • Physical intimacy - the need for sex.
  • Social contact - the need for friends, social interaction.
  • status - the need for social standing/importance.
  • Security - the need to be safe.
  • Tranquility - the need for peace/contentment.
  • Vengeance - the need to strike back.
  • Spirituality - the need to connect on a spiritual level.

Internal needs vary by person. Therefore, intrinsic motivation differs by individual. The important thing is for you to know what is important to you. Why not start now?

Review the list again and rank each item listed using a scale of 1 to 3:

  • 1 = not important;
  • 2 = important:;
  • 3 = extremely important;

Be honest with yourself, because your answers are solely for your benefit. Once you've reviewed the list, take a look at the items ranked as 3. Now determine if it's a absolute basic need necessary to your survival.Automatically, you know these needs must be taken care of before all others or your motivation will die.

Lastly, focus on those intrinsic motivation factors that are ranked as 3 but are not basic needs. You now have those things that really matter and serve as your core motivators.
