Novel Motivation
For years, I wanted to write my own novel, but I'd never been able to get motivated to do it.
It was just an idea I casually tossed around in my mind rather then something I actively worked towards.
However, after my son was born, all of this changed. Watching him grow up and play made me think of all the stories I loved as I child and all the stories I wanted to be able to share with him.
I decided I was going to write a book for young boys like him. Although it was difficult trying to write a novel while I took care of my son, I tried to set manageable time goals.
I made sure to give myself at least 20 uninterrupted minutes each day in which I could work on my novel. Whether I was plotting, trying to overcome writers block, or actively writing, I tried to take full advantage of these 20 minutes as well as any additional free time I could muster up each day.
It took nearly 3 years of work, but my novel is at last complete. My son is now almost old enough to read, and I can't wait to share it with him.
I am now researching how to shop my book around to publishers. Working on my novel helped me appreciate the importance of having clear and easily achievable goals.
I often used to set impossible goals for myself, then got frustrated when I wasn't able to achieve them and gave up. Sticking to such an easy to follow plan made it easy for me to keep going.
I hope that others can apply my experiences to their own goals in life, no matter what it is they are trying to achieve.
Try to figure out something that you will easily be able to do each day, and stick to that, even if it seems small. If you stick to it, you'll be able to complete your goal just like I did.
