At the Stadium - Sports Poetry By John W. Scott

An athlete trained
like the November rain,
body fine tuned
through years of dedication
his muscles taut
like a piano's straining strings
runs with power,
spine tingling
down the perimeter
of the field of green;
the spherical ball
glides gracefully
fifty yards
through the air of the stadium's cavity,
almost in pace
with this defensive flare
making its graceful decent
into the outstretched arms
of a receiver,
one hundred and eighty-five pounds,
who is poised
and will not yield
on the playing field
before the ball
can reach his arms
the defensive back
running strong
from the camp
on the other side
hurls himself
through the air
like a human cannonball
from a Civil War ship
as his helmet
crashes into the chest
of the receiver poised
to make his catch
whose arms are outstretched
with an unsuspecting smile
awaiting the arrival
of the spinning projectile
his moment of glory soon to be
if only for a little while
but instead to the ground
he suddenly falls
with a thud
that reverberates
to the highest row
a spattering of blood
a sound that can be heard
by all who can hear
in this football stadium so
severe
of an otherwise quiet
and peaceful day
while birds fly overhead
pausing for a peck of food
left behind by careless spectators
with seventy-thousand faces
poised aglow
flags from officiating referees
fly yellow into the air-
"not fair, not fair"
and the team perpetrating
this offense
loses fifteen yards of ground
in this offensive battle
for territorial dominance
as the receiver lies there on the ground
without a sound
the scene repeats itself,
once, twice, and three
in this particular gladiatorial game
of modern-day civility
the third time,
our hapless receiver,
on the ground remains,
on the ground he stays
a few in the stands may even have prayed
for the player and team
they hope so much to win
and he is carried off
by two strong men,
in a stretcher
never to play there again.

Dawn of a New Discovery: Inspiring World Poems Edited by John Scott This is a small collection of poems, original and from several sources, that is hoped to inspire interest in writing and reading poetry. The poetry presents a kaleidoscope of ideas concerning lands, spirituality, children and youths, oppression and violence, school life and struggles, as well as painting a picture of hope.

The poetry included from some of the more well-known poets will hopefully educate the reader on the history of poetry, and give him or her a measuring stick to evaluate the poetry that they might write themselves and encouragement to write poetry. There is a small section on how to write poetry for youths.

Some of the best youth poets can be found in the inner cities such as in Newark, New Jersey, where this collection was compiled, and a few of their poems are included. In today's highly charged musical world, poetry has become an essential part of life. Dawn of a New Discovery, Available, February, 1, 2009 Also, please visit: Dawn of a New Discovery Website.

Sports Poems: Hockey

Hear the scrape
And hear the smack
The Reach out your hand
Don't let it go further
Or... well, you understand.
I see the puck coming
I see the assist
Soon enough
It'll meet with my stick...
I hear no sound.

Sports Poems: Bowling

In hopes of a strike you play for all ten;
A spare's what you get so you try it again.
This time a split; You're too heavy or light..
Next frame comes a blow now you're ready to fight!
The approach is too sticky or the alleys sure run;
The ball doesn't fit you, this wood weights a ton.
You can't hit your spot, your angles not right;
Your timing is bad, it just isn't your night.
Your score is way down, your spirits are too.
Down goes your average but that's nothing new!
A fill in the ninth makes life seem so merry.
Then comes the tenth; It's a chop or a cherry.
Thus goes this game of "Ten Pins," I'm told.
You just haven't lived "Til you've gone out and "Bowled."

Sports Poems: Golf

In My Hand I Hold A Ball,
White And Dimpled, and Rather Small.
Oh, How Bland It Does Appear,
This Harmless Looking Little Sphere.
By It's Size I Could Not Guess,
The Awesome Strength It Does Possess.
But Since I Fell Beneath Its Spell,
I've Wandered Through The Fires Of Hell.

My Life Has Not Been Quite The Same,
Since I Chose To Play This Stupid Game.
It Rules My Mind For Hours On End,
A Fortune It Has Made Me Spend.

It Has Made Me Yell, Curse And Cry,
I Hate Myself And Want To Die.
It Promises A Thing Called Par,
If I Can Hit It Straight And Far.
To Master Such A Tiny Ball,
Should Not Be Very Hard At All.
But My Desires The Ball Refuses,
And Does Exactly As It Chooses.

It Hooks And Slices, Dribbles And Dies,
And Even Disappears Before My Eyes.
Often It Will Have A Whim,
To Hit A Tree Or Take A Swim.

With Miles Of Grass On Which To Land,
It Finds A Tiny Patch Of Sand.
Then Has Me Offering Up My Soul,
If Only It Would Find The Hole.

It's Made Me Whimper like A Pup,
And Swear That I Will Give It Up.
And Take To Drink To Ease My Sorrow,
But The Ball Knows, I'll Be Back Tomorrow.

Stand proud you noble swingers of clubs and losers of balls....
