A SWOT analysis is an acronym for analyzing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to strategies, plans, and goals. Primarily, this highly successful method is used in business, but is becoming more popular for individual goal setting and achieving success. Why? Because when used appropriately it works!

This type of analysis prompts you to consider internal influences that can positively or negatively impact your ability to achieve your goals. The internal factors are your strengths and weaknesses. From there, you consider external influences that can positively or negatively impact your ability to achieve your goals. The external factors are opportunities and threats.

No Matter What Your Personal Goals, Conducting a SWOT Analysis is Smart. It'll Help You Remove Roadblocks and Increase Peak Performance

Download the free SWOT analysis tool or you can simply use a sheet of paper. Take your time as you do this exercise. There is no time limit, so go at your own pace. You're on a personal fact finding mission - equipping yourself with the smartest edge for success.

Now, let's get started. Write your personal goal or plan across the top of the form or paper. You will, then, proceed to list the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to your plans. To help get your juices flowing, the following questions may help. Be honest with yourself, because it will help you plan to capitalize on strengths and opportunities, while compensating or eliminating weaknesses and threats.

Questions to Help Identify Your Strengths

  • What skills are talents do you possess that will help you achieve your goal?
  • Why are you passionate about achieving your goal?
  • Who are people who have already achieved your goal?

Questions to Help Identify Your Weaknessess

  • What skills do you currently lack, but need in order to achieve your goal?
  • What fears do you have about your goals?
  • What worries you about pursuing your goals?

Questions to Help Identify Opportunities

  • When do you do your best work?
  • What role model actions can you follow or investigate further?
  • What support system do you have?

Questions to Help Identify Threats

  • Who are the negative people who can damper your enthusiasm?
  • What time or money constraints are you up against?
  • Who or what is your competition?

Now, consider the following:

  • One hour of planning can save you hours of work
  • Life will not go according to plan in you do not have a plan
