Types of MotivationYou Chose. Low Grade or Premium?
Primarily, there are two general types of motivation that spur you to action - extrinsic, which I classify as low grade fuel; and intrinsic, which I classify as premium fuel. Granted, there are many motivation theories out there, but what matters most to you is what will motivate you. You want the most efficient and effective fuel for goal achievement. It's really that simple. What Does Your Fuel Manual Say?Fuel is that something that sustains or encourages. The low grade variety is cheaper which means its easier to obtain. It burns faster and you need more of it. Unfortunately, the residuals it leaves behind are not always the most desirable. On the other hand, premium fuel is high quality and more costly. It's slow burning and last longer - providing a more even and powerful punch. It's About Substance! The Wikipedia describes motivation as "the internal condition that activates behavior and gives it direction; energizes and directs goal-oriented behavior." Intrinsic motivation comes from within. It's more costly because it takes more time and effort to develop. It's those internal factors that make taking action fun. It's those efforts and action you can happily perform all day - simply because. It feeds off of itself - generating enough energy for ultimate success. Of all the types of motivation, this is the best one to have, because once you have it,it can last a long time. Needless to say, it's also very rare. Extrinsic motivation is developed externally - environmental or other factors outside of the person drive the action. Of all the types of motivation, this is the easiest to find, often varies, and the least reliable. It needs fed constantly - many times giving out sooner than expected. Additionally, extrinsic motivational methods such as fear and coercion often leave behind negative feelings. On a positive note, this type of motivation can help in the development of new habits possibly leading to intrinsic motivation. All's Fair When It Comes to Motivation or ProcrastinationYou can use all the motivational help you can get. The reality is it takes time to develop intrinsic motivation. This does not mean you can not achieve your goals. You just need to be smart about it. This means using low grade fuel while you work towards the premium level to keep moving.Fueling your motivation is what it's all about!
